Hello and thanks for taking the time to click About to learn something about me . I’m a science teacher and a piano player who is fascinated by the way our minds work. I am delving into the neuroscience that explains how the creative process improves learning. I’ve been teaching middle school science for over 30 years, and I’ve found that curiosity about the mind of a middle school student goes a lot further than the inevitable frustration experienced by working with “brains under construction.” Over the last three decades, I’ve directed over 50 student jazz combos both during the school year and in my summer breaks. What we’ve seen demonstrated over and over in classrooms is now being explained by neuroscience - creativity makes a better brain! Music has been shown to strengthen the connections between different parts of our brain. The creative processes - designing, playing, building, problem solving, and making music - are seriously great ways to support the dopamine that leads to strong learning. Making goofy science videos reminds me and my students not to take ourselves to seriously, and that learning can and should be fun.
